For a P1,500 individual annual fee, become a member of the Lopez Memorial Museum and Library and be entitled to the following benefits: a personalized membership card; free unlimited access to museum exhibitions; free unlimited usage of the library; free unlimited use of Wi-Fi; discounts on selected library services, including printing and scanning; discounts on lectures and workshop fees.

You will also receive members-only emails with advance notice of exhibitions, programs, events and special offers. What’s more, you may check out two books at a time for 10 days from the library’s lending section.

Lopez Museum executive director Cedie Lopez Vargas says the lending service is a way to allow users of the library to take home and savor books that would otherwise be too expensive to purchase. “You could also take out books for your children or for your spouse,” she suggests.

Additionally, the library is also accepting book donations for the lending service. While Filipiniana would be welcome, Vargas says prospective donors should be guided by the following questions: What books would you like to share? What do you think people would like to read about? What would you like to see?

The Lopez Museum membership offer is open to individuals who live or work in the Philippines.
Stephen Jay Gould writes in Crossing Over: Where Art and Science Meet (2000)

The much maligned practice of taxonomy, the ordering and classification of organisms, takes a culturally imposed backseat to the more interventionist and generalizing style of experimentation and quantification in science. But taxonomy should be viewed as one of the most fundamental, and most noble, of scientific pursuits – for what can be more basic than the parsing of nature’s rich and confusing complexity? Our categories, moreover, record our modes of thought, and taxonomy therefore teaches us as much about our mental functioning as about nature’s variety.

We must taxonomize to make sense of anything diverse and complex. We therefore classify our activities and professions in various ways, just as we order other organisms in Linnaean standards.

Flora de Filipinas by Fr. Francisco Manuel Blanco

The “grand” (monumental) edition of Father Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas (1877; 1880) is one of the Lopez Library’s highlights. During the 1883 World’s Fair in Amsterdam, his drawings won the prize of honor for science. Fr. Blanco’s floral encyclopedia, “the Spanish Linneo,” consisted of four volumes of colored plates printed in Manila and two volumes of color plates printed in Barcelona.

What is Natural History?

Natural history tells the story of our living earth. It comprises the systematic observation, classification, interpretation, and description of the biosphere and its inhabitants.

Natural history is a primary component of culture. Every society develops some system for classifying, interpreting, and valuing animals, plants, and other natural phenomena. These systems shape our understanding of the world and our place in it.

Natural history is field-based. It begins with direct observation and study of organisms in the conditions under which they actually live.

Natural history is interdisciplinary. While grounded in the natural sciences, it engages the humanities, social sciences, and the arts, and it informs technical fields such as medicine, agriculture, forestry, and environmental management.

Why does Natural History matter?

Natural history helps to shape communities and individuals. It gives us deeper insights into our relationships with other beings and the places we inhabit.

Natural history promotes sound environmental practice. It grounds policy in ecological reality, guides decision-making, and inspires and enhances conservation efforts at all levels.

Natural history informs and energizes environmental education. It connects students with nature, creates synergy across fields, and draws strength from all major divisions of the university. It prepares students to live honorably and responsibly in a sustainable world.

Source: http://naturalhistorynetwork.org/about/

On April 27, 4-6 pm: Off The Ground: An Afternoon of Music,...

On April 27, 4-6 pm: Off The Ground: An Afternoon of Music, Poetry, and Visual Arts

By every nation’s first duty of self-defense and self-preservation, we took up arms and fought the invader. No self-respecting nation could have shirked the challenge of that treacherous attack that started in Baguio on December 8, 1941. To have avoided that challenge or to have cowered before it would have been to lose all pride and dignity, to have suffered a bottomless humiliation.”

http://www.gov.ph/1943/11/15/inaugural-address-of-president-manuel-l-quezon-november-15-1943/

The Lopez Museum and Library will be closed on April 9, Tuesday in commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan / Day of Valor (also known as Bataan Day)

Telegram of President Quezon to President Roosevelt, February 8,...

Telegram of President Quezon to President Roosevelt, February 8, 1942

The situation of my country has become so desperate that I feel that positive action is demanded. Militarily it is evident that no help will reach us from the United States in time either to rescue the beleaguered garrison now fighting so gallantly or to prevent the complete overrunning of the entire Philippine Archipelago. My people entered the war with the confidence that the United States would bring such assistance to us as would make it possible to sustain the conflict with some chance of success. All our soldiers in the field were animated by the belief that help would be forthcoming. This help has not and evidently will not be realized. Our people have suffered death, misery, devastation. After 2 months of war not the slightest assistance has been forthcoming from the United States. Aid and succour have been dispatched to other warring nations such as England, Ireland, Australia, the N. E. I. and perhaps others, but not only has nothing come here, but apparently no effort has been made to bring anything here. The American Fleet and the British Fleet, the two most powerful navies in the world, have apparently adopted an attitude which precludes any effort to reach these islands with assistance. As a result, while enjoying security itself, the United States has in effect condemned the sixteen millions of Filipinos to practical destruction in order to effect a certain delay. You have promised redemption, but what we need is immediate assistance and protection. We are concerned with what is to transpire during the next few months and years as well as with our ultimate destiny. There is not the slightest doubt in our minds that victory will rest with the United States, but the question before us now is : Shall we further sacrifice our country and our people in a hopeless fight? I voice the unanimous opinion of my War Cabinet and I am sure the unanimous opinion of all Filipinos that under the circumstances we should take steps to preserve the Philippines and the Filipinos from further destruction.
